Feature: FeedMeF1 Feature Exclusive: Secret Plans Being Made for Future USGP

Wednesday, May 24, 2006 - 06:01 AM

In a very interesting interview FeedMeF1 has exclusively been told of another possible future destination in the United States for the Formula One series. The following discussion was held in confidence with a reluctant source.

Question: Will the USGP return to Indianapolis after 2006?
Source: Well, as the speedway has stated. They didn’t invest for just a seven year run.

Q. What about Las Vegas?
S. A Formula One Grand Prix in Vegas certainly won’t likely happen in 2007.

Q. Why not?
S. Time really. As in not enough time to plan let alone execute a FIA grade 1 circuit.

Q. Any other city?
S. There is only one FIA grade 1 circuit that exists in the U.S.

Q. Any plans for one?
S. One is in it’s infancy.

Q. OK, Where?
S. Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Q. Why Tulsa?
S. Marketing.

Q. Can you elaborate?
S. Tulsa has many attributes not common to other cities. It was once known worldwide as the Oil Capital of the World. They lost that long ago and would like to become a destination location again.

Q. Why Formula One? Why not go after NASCAR?
S. The thinking is to have what other cities don’t have. Aside from Indianapolis, as stated before, there isn’t a circuit that could come close to hosting a Formula One Grand Prix. Aside from that, to have an International event in Tulsa is more of what they are looking for. NASCAR could join in at a latter date with a Road Course race since they only have two now (other than the Busch race in Mexico) and are looking to expand in that area.

Q. When will this happen?
S. From what is understood, the target date is for 2010. The original idea and location for the circuit came about in 1998 but not originally to be an FIA grade 1 circuit.

Q. How far would have to driven to get to this Tulsa track?
S. It is planned to be in the City next to the Airport. So it would definitely be a Tulsa Circuit.

Q. What about lodging and such?
S. Tulsa has been in a hotel building boom for a few years now. They have a new convention centre coming online in a couple years. They also have three casinos in the metropolitan area.

Q. How infant is this plan?
S. As stated before, it started in 1998 but has progressed rapidly in the last few months. There have been some typical bumps as with any major undertaking. A new Mayor has come to office in Tulsa but, the Senior Oklahoma Senator, James Inhofe’s office is in the know. Inhofe is a former Mayor of Tulsa. He is quite versed in the International effect that this can mean for Tulsa as well as all of Oklahoma and surrounding states. He has a lot of, shall we say, pull.

Q. What are the odds of this actually happening?
S. Not really a bettor, but since gambling was brought into this. The Creek Nation is well underway with a major expansion. The largest Native American tribe in the United States, the Cherokee Nation just announced a major expansion of their barely two year old Resort. Cherokee Nation council member(s) are aware of this plan for a circuit.. It may be noted that the Cherokee Nation had previously looked into converting their nearby horse track to attract a NASCAR race.

Q. Is the Cherokee Nation involved?
S. Unless the Circuit is located outside the city, one would not think anything other than a marketing tie in would be probable. That said, the circuit would definitely be a draw for all the casinos around Tulsa.

Q. Interesting.
S. Interesting indeed.
